Accelerating European BESS Market Entry for a Global IPP

Client: A leading global developer and Independent Power Producer (IPP), seeking to expand its renewable energy project footprint in Europe.

Situation: The client aimed to rapidly build a pre-construction BESS project pipeline in Europe but faced challenges due to limited in-house expertise in the local development cycle, the evolving regulatory landscape, and market dynamics.

Client Challenge: The client struggled to quickly identify, evaluate, and secure high-potential BESS opportunities along the development life-cycle.

- In-House BESS Project Development: Led the development process for early-stage projects, including obtaining site control, navigating local regulations, permitting, and stakeholder engagement.

- Co-Development Pipeline Origination: Originated a multi-GW pipeline of early-stage BESS projects in Germany, through a Right-Of-First-Refusal approach.

- Ready-to-Build (RTB) project acquisition: Identified, evaluated, and executed the acquisition of ready-to-build projects, including comparison of Route-to-Market providers, sourcing of EPC partners, and coordinating the legal the contract closing process.

Client Outcome: After evaluating several projects, FlexUp supported the client’s successful acquisition of their first BESS project in Europe, a 30 MW Ready-to-Build BESS project in the Nordics.
